Parish Jails Revolving Door Results in Armed Robbery

JamesPONCHATOULA—On August 5, 2009, at approximately 11:40 p.m. officers were called to the scene of an armed robbery which occurred at the intersection of Cedar Lane and Tower Road in Ponchatoula, according to Chief of Police Bry Layrisson. The victim stated that he was robbed at gunpoint and forced from his vehicle by two unknown males. Detectives with the Ponchatoula Police Department gathered evidence and information which led to the arrests of Jamie Tobias James, 21, of 910 SE Railroad Avenue and William S. Wilson, 19, of 100 Hoover Street. Further investigation revealed that the two suspects fled in a stolen vehicle driven by Malcolm Jones, 17, of 56359 Bickham Chapel Road in Independence.

On August 6, 2009, officers with the Ponchatoula Police Department recovered a stolen vehicle from Amite, Layrisson reported. At approximately 1:15 a.m. officers observed a traffic violation on West McClellan Street and conducted a stop. Jones was arrested and charged with running a stop sign, no driver’s license, possession of stolen property, and misrepresentation during booking. Chief of Police Bry Layrisson reported that his officers previously arrested Jones on July 26, 2009, and charged him with the following offenses;

14-counts vehicle burglary
1-count auto theft
1-count attempted auto theft
1-count burglary of inhabited dwelling
1-count possession of stolen property
1-count felony theft
1-count resisting an officer

Layrisson reported that Jones was released from the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office Jail on August 5, 2009, at approximately 1:00 p.m. Jones was released on his own recognizance by a Sheriff’s Office employee. Within hours of Jones release a vehicle was stolen from a local business in Amite. The vehicle was recovered by the Ponchatoula Police Department during the above traffic stop.

Jones, Wilson, and James have all been arrested and charged with armed robbery. The suspects have been placed in the Tangipahoa Parish Jail.

“Once again the parish jail refuses to incarcerate a violent criminal with 20 pending charges. This perpetrator was released right back into our community to victimize more citizens. The taxpayers of Tangipahoa Parish need to be made aware that they are paying for a parish jail which is occupied by a majority of federal and state prisoners,” Layrisson said.
