Ponchatoula man arrested for rape, etc.

PONCHATOULA---A 23-year-old Ponchatoula man, who was wanted on rape charges, has been arrested on simple rape and a host of other charges.

Ponchatoula Police Chief Bry Layrisson said Durell C. Jones, 23, of E. Beech St. in Ponchatoula, was wanted on rape charges following an incident involving a juvenile earlier this fall.

Layrisson said that on Tuesday, Jones was arrested after officers spotted the known-suspect where he was seen holding a gun at a residential property in town.

Layrisson said officers approached Jones in reference to an arrest warrant which had been issued on the simple rape charge when the suspect fled into the residence and discarded the gun.

Police chased after Jones who ran out the back door of the residence and continued on foot a short distance before he was caught and taken into custody by PPD officers.

Jones was taken to PPD for booking, and while there, the suspect kicked in the door of the booking room, breaking the door facing. He was properly booked and then transported to the Amite Jail for lock-up.

Jones has been charged with simple rape, contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, criminal damage to property, and resisting arrest.
