Filing a false police report is a crime.


Anyone filing a false police report may be prosecuted under LA RS 14:133. Filing false public records shall be punishable by imprisonment for not more than five years with or without hard labor or shall be fined not more than $5,000, or both.

In addition to the penalty provided for above, a person convicted of filing a false police report may be ordered to pay restitution to the state if the state suffered a loss as a result of the offense. Restitution shall include the payment of legal interest at the rate provided in LA RS 13:4202.
